Turkish Facilities Assisting Uyghur Youth
Two youth centers in Turkey have emerged as crucial support systems for young members of the Uyghur ethnic minority community who escaped persecution in China's Xinjiang region. These centers have played a vital role in providing education and addressing drug addiction among these Uyghur youth.
The East Turkistan Youth Center, founded by Abdusami Hoten, focuses on guiding Uyghur youth away from negative paths such as addiction and gambling, and reintegrating them into society. Despite finding safety in Turkey, some Uyghur youth still face challenges like unemployment and drug addiction.
Similarly, the Palwan Uyghur Youth Center, established by Samarjan Saidi, offers sports, skills training, and education. With financial support from the Uyghur NextGen Project, the center expanded to include a boxing club and various courses. These centers also aim to help young people prepare for college by aligning guidance with their interests and talents.
The centers not only provide education and support but also serve as cultural hubs. They offer classes on Uyghur history, art, and music, showcasing Uyghur culture. The centers' founders and organizers have created a sense of family and belonging for the displaced Uyghur youth.
The Uyghur community in Xinjiang has faced persecution, with millions detained in "re-education camps." China has been accused of human rights abuses, including forced labor, sterilization, and oppression. The youth centers in Turkey have become vital spaces for these young individuals to overcome their challenges, learn, and reconnect with their culture.
